MISSION:
JISAO is committed to building and fostering diversity in our scientific community. We believe that a diverse organization reflects and serves the multidisciplinary and global nature of our research. To create an inclusive community, JISAO collaborates with its partners at NOAA and the University of Washington on such outreach activities as internships, career fairs, summer camps and recruitment programs.
|

Diversity refers to more than race or ethnicity. It encompasses many of the differences that make people unique, including age, gender, ethnicity, culture, belief systems, family histories, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and education level. Building a diverse workforce creates an inclusive, open environment in which everyone is valued, supported and respected. It provides a richer, more creative work experience.

Current efforts focus on establishing partnerships with existing UW programs and with NOAA's annual Science Camp in K-12 science activities. A college-level summer internship program and a work force recruitment/retention plan are also in the developmental stages. Our aim is to provide enhanced opportunities for underrepresented groups and to nurture the next generation of scientists by fostering enthusiasm for science.
