University of Delaware global surface air temperature and precipitation climatology and monthly grids, 1950-99

Produced by Cort Willmott, Kenji Matsuura, and Michael Rawlins

Introduction | Data

Canada and continental US domain.
ENSO-related November through April surface air temperature anomalies.

These data sets are a subset of the global and regional surface air temperature and precipitation data sets developed at the University of Delaware (UD). I downloaded selected data sets and have written them as netCDF files. The different data sets are based on a variety of analysis techniques, and you need to read the documentation at the UD WWW site to understand the analysis method that is employed. Also, I obtain data sets as I need them, and the netCDF files may not be the latest versions of these analyses. Questions about the data sets should be addressed to the authors listed in the documentation files.

Finally, the native resolution of the data sets is 0.5-degrees latitude-longitude. I have calculated 1-degree longitude-latitude resolution versions of the year-month grids, and they are sufficiently detailed for many calculations.

The data:

Global precipitation climatology (version 3.01):

  • At JISAO: /home/disk/muggy/data/willmott/rain/precipudclim.nc
  • The data in ASCII format
  • The data in netCDF format (~62 Mb)
  • Documentation
  • Analyses for Africa and South America are available through these links.
  • Version 3.02 in ASCII format

Global precipitation monthly grids for 1950-99:

  • At JISAO, these files are "precipud5099.nc.gz" and "precipud5099.1deg.nc" on /home/disk/muggy/data/willmott/rain/
  • The data in ASCII format
  • Gzipped netCDF format (61Mb).
  • One-degree latitude-longitude resolution netCDF version (~77 Mb).
  • Documentation

Arctic precipitation monthly grids for 1960-90:
This data set contains observations from Canada and the former Soviet Union that are not included in the global data sets. There is also an Arctic climatology at the UD.

  • At JISAO, these files are "preciparcticud6090.nc" and "preciparcticud6090.1deg.nc" on /home/disk/muggy/data/willmott/rain/
  • The data in ASCII format
  • netCDF format (48Mb).
  • One-degree latitude-longitude resolution netCDF version (~12Mb).
  • Documentation

Global surface air temperature climatology (version 3.01):

  • At JISAO: /home/disk/muggy/data/willmott/temperature/sfctempudclim.nc
  • The data in ASCII format
  • The data in netCDF format (~62 Mb)
  • Documentation
  • Version 3.02 in ASCII format

Global surface air temperature monthly grids for 1950-99:

  • At JISAO, these files are "sfctempud5099.nc.gz" and "sfctempud5099.1deg.nc" on /home/disk/muggy/data/willmott/temperature/
  • The data in ASCII format
  • Gzipped netCDF format (61Mb).
  • A 1-degree latitude-longitude resolution version of this data set (78 Mb).

Arctic surface air temperature monthly grids for 1960-90:
