Southern Oscillation Index, 1866 - June 1999 (SOI)

The National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Prediction Center calculates the SOI from Tahiti and Darwin Sea-Level Pressure (SLP) as follows:
SOI(month,year) = ( T(month,year) - D(month,year) )

where:
  • T & D are anomalies of Tahiti and Darwin SLP that have been normalized by the standard deviation of the monthly values of the respective index for all months combined for the years 1951 to 1980.
  • S is the standard deviation of the numerator for all months combined for the years 1951 to 1980.

    The time series is linked here in ASCII format. [In MATLAB, "load soi1866199.dat" will load the time series into a variable named "soi."]

    The Tahiti and Darwin time series are obtained from the University of East Anglia for 1866-97 and from the NCEP Climate Prediction Center for 1998-99. The NCEP site also provides the most up-to-date values and analyses of the SOI. NCEP also uses data for the period 1951-80 to standardize their series so you can simply append their values to mine.

    In the following table, the SOI values have been multiplied by 10, and missing values are indicated by blanks.
