Howard University Visit 08

Seminar Exchange - 2008

JISAO director Tom Ackerman visited Howard University and the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS) in October as part of a continuing collaborative exchange. The visit included a seminar by Dr. Ackerman entitled "Clouds in Climate Models: Real, lies, or statistics?", meetings with Howard University faculty and NCAS scientists, a visit to the NCAS/ Howard University Beltsville Research Site, as well as poster presentations by graduate students from Howard University.

Dr. Ackerman invited the participation of HU graduate students in the third annual UW Graduate Student Climate Conference with JISAO offering to help cover travel expenses to Seattle. He also had the opportunity to informally recruit undergraduate students for the NCAS/ JISAO Summer Internship Program.

In order to formalize the partnership, a Memorandum of Understanding between NCAS and the UW College of the Environment is currently being drafted. Dr. Ackerman intends to travel to DC this winter for the annual meeting of the NCAS Advisory Board. And in summer 2009 JISAO will host at least three undergraduate interns selected from among the NCAS consortium institutes which include Jackson State University, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the State University of New York at Albany.
