Spotlight: Donata Giglio

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Donata on the coastDonata is a new Postdoctoral Research Fellow at JISAO, working with Gregory Johnson, oceanographer in the Ocean Climate Research Division at Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA) and affiliate Professor in the School of Oceanography at the University of Washington. Donata is studying the mean field and variability of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and related changes in heat and freshwater content of the upper and subsurface ocean, using Argo temperature and salinity profiles. The ACC is a very large current system that connects the three major ocean basins and plays a key role in ocean heat transport, water mass formation, ocean carbon uptake, and in regulating the earth’s climate in general.

Donata received her Ph.D from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, where she worked under the guidance of Prof. Dean Roemmich and collaborated closely with Prof. Sarah Gille, Dr. Bruce Cornuelle and Dr. Ivana Cerovecki. During her Ph.D, Donata studied large-scale ocean circulation, dynamics, and air-sea exchanges, based on observational datasets including Argo and satellite altimetry, and viewed in the framework of modern theoretical ideas. She described the mean field and wind-driven interannual variability of the subtropical North Pacific, investigated annual steric variability in the subsurface ocean, and she produced the first ocean based estimate of climatological monthly heat and freshwater air-sea fluxes using Argo temperature and salinity data.

Donata is originally from Italy, where she completed her undergraduate studies and a master's degree in Environmental Engineering before joining Scripps. Donata is very excited about this new chapter of her life here in Seattle and looks forward to interacting with the many great scientists at the University of Washington and NOAA.

In her free time, Donata loves snorkeling, surfing, playing volleyball and soccer on the beach and hiking with her husband, Aneesh, and friends.  She really enjoyed hiking around Southern California and the National Parks in the central-western US and she looks forward to exploring the parks in the Pacific Northwest.
